I open up my mouth / And I can hardly breathe It’s a habit I’ve got / Just like the great dark sleep I gather up the quilt / But it’s torn at the seams I always open my mouth and say the same wrong thing I’m just repeating myself / Like a dependable thief I’m such a tired guest / Can’t find the time to leave I’ll meet you under the bus / I threw us under the fleet I always open my mouth and say the same wrong thing I never get it right / I haven’t learned a thing I turn away and run / It’s just the coward in me You just gotta laugh / I’m just as dumb as I seem I always open my mouth and say the same wrong thing Same wrong thing / Same thing wrong Same wrong mouth / Same wrong tongue I think I broke your heart / Like it was mine to break But the cruel truth is just my bitter shame Now I’m just a ghost / I fly with bitter wings I always open my mouth and say the same wrong thing I open up my eyes / I can hardly see The indisputable lies in the deep blue sea I tried to get it right / But all you got is grief I always open my mouth and say the same wrong thing I’m a permanent con / Selling permanent bliss Hiding my permanent mouth beneath a permanent kiss I try to play a part / But all you get is me I always open my mouth and say the same wrong thing Same wrong thing / Same thing wrong Same wrong mouth / Same wrong tongue Same wrong bell / Same wrong rung Same wrong tune / Same wrong song

Step aside and welcome back Yonder gust of wind Helping hand all full of face Under current / Empty space Blow a hole from here to there Yonder gust of wind I kissed your hand on automatic You kicked up dust / Got all dramatic You roped a steer like no one’s business Cut a rug like Mister Dizzy Spin Spin Spin Spin Dizzy / Spin Spin Dizzy Make it make it make it make it / Spin Spin Dizzy Step aside and welcome back…. Pencil, paper / Scratch it out Draw some blood and make it count Draw some blood like no one’s business Draw some blood like Mister Dizzy Spin Spin Spin Spin Dizzy / Spin Spin Dizzy…… Step aside and welcome back Yonder gust of wind Promise me you’ll part the curtain Promise me I’m not a burden Promise me we’ll stay in business Promise me like Mister Dizzy Spin Spin Spin Spin Dizzy……….

How many jaws make a bite? Things are so wrong that they almost feel right The bruises are blooming tonight It’s almost like springtime in the garden of fight The glass was swept under the rug The plans that we had made a thundering thud The blanket was under the gun Take cover beneath all the layers of love How many laws make it wrong? Things are so weak that I almost feel strong The cuts are beginning to heal But that doesn’t matter / The scars are so real Sweep the evidence under the rug The burden of proof made a thundering thud The crime was committing the thug But the laws that were broken were worth all the blood How many jaws make a bite? Things are so wrong that they almost feel right The bruises are blooming tonight It’s almost like springtime in the garden of fight Things just dried up when they emptied the pool But you let me dive in like an Olympian fool I cut like knife / Didn’t make me no splash The water was gone / An Olympian crash The shouts were swept under the rug The shadows released made a thundering thud The whispers delivered the hug All the secrets we told were all covered in mud So Take cover beneath all the layers of love Take cover beneath all the layers of love

Pony up the fences and belly up the horse They’re burning up the smokehouse with a contradicting force I’m forgetting all my mantras / Forgetting all my lines Towing all the lines of hope to the valley of the sky When worse came to worse / I feel alright Saddle up the curse / I feel alright Gonna grind it into dirt / I feel alright I feel alright / I feel alright / I feel alright / I feel alright I’ve rallied up the defense and we’re taking up the cause We’ve opened up our fists and seen our hands have turned to claws Our backs were getting straighter until the walls come tumbling down Now we’re crawling in the crater Of the brand new scaled down Sometimes my eyes seem open Sometimes they’re sealed shut Got one eye on the mountain top and one eye in the rut Sometimes an angel guides me to where pain and light are joined And sometimes the rolling wheel ain’t got no point I’m gonna pound the mighty trail into the blurry dust of dirt The wind’s a mighty gale forcing horses to desert And I’m curiously rusted and I’m suffering from gripe But we’ll circle every wagon and we’ll make it through When worse came to worse / I feel alright Saddle up the curse / I feel alright Gonna grind it into dirt / I feel alright I feel alright / I feel alright / I feel alright / I feel alright

The Dance 05:51
The dance is commencing / Transparent and bare The butchers are cutting the orchestra’s hair I’m side step believing about half what I heard It’s all fragments and circles and curious words I bundled my courage and hid in the rushes I lifted up higher what couldn’t be trusted I stood on the edge of an elegant razor You handled the blade with angelic grace You found my heart broken and you forced your way in You pulled up a chair and declared me a friend You tended the stubborn that couldn’t be bent You mended the fence and defended the mend I come to the water so stupid and thirsty I gather up cups and I try not to hurry I take every drop with discretion and care Even when that don’t matter I still lay myself bare And all through the chaos you never withdrew You taped up the tears and you bandaged the wound You sent away fire / You didn’t let it come in You stared down the tanks until peace trickled in I once was immune Now I catch every cold I battered my system and bullied my soul I avoided disease through denial and rage I once was immune Now I catch every plague Returning from battle and weather permitting I’ll gather up rivers and keep the plates spinning And bestow all the flowing to relevant oceans Where best kept endeavors deliver the omens And all through the chaos you never withdrew You taped up the tears and you bandaged the wound You sent away fire / You didn’t let it come in You stared down the tanks until peace trickled in

Lazy Fuck 03:33
I’m a lazy f ck / A dedicated schmuck I kick right back and I bank on luck I hold my cards and I fold right up This boat don’t rock / I’m a lazy f ck I back right down when things get hard I’ve got lots to fix in my own back yard If you want to get to heaven, wish you lots of luck Don’t waste your time with a lazy f ck I dreamed a dream for a long long time And I spent some time in the diamond mine Now I hardly move ‘cuz I quit that race I’m a lazy f ck / I rest my case I ate a bowl of chips in record time I got a borrowed cat named Lazy Rhyme I’m an inside man with an outside truck I’d start it up but I’m a lazy f ck I used to build a bridge when it came along From verse to verse like an epic song Now I’ll just shout it out like a riffin’ slut Ain’t no bridge her I’m a lazy f ck I used to break my back like a battered mutt But I got nothing to show so I just gave up It ain’t complicated when you’re in a rut Just turn the page like a lazy f ck

Sweet Bouquet Vase of steel Nights of hungry black Time stands still A month has gone I’ve come to take you back There’s something on the table that reminds me of the song That you sang to me beneath the breeze when everything was wrong Everything was push and shove All wagon wheel and whip Cupid shot an arrow with poison on the tip There’s something very troubling / I can see it from a far I can see it out the window shining like the northern star Shoulder me a boulder from a sliver to a rock I’ve half a mind and twice the heart to take another shot This room is a liar / It’s colder and colder Over and over / It lies to my face Roll me over slower now and paint me in a corner I’ll meet you in a century when both of us are born Crawling in the forest / Forgiven by the trees Lightning struck a blade of grass Surrounded by the weeds

Ashamed 02:53
The world owes you everything You owe the world change The world pulled a quick one while you turned and walked away Now there's nothing spinning 'round And that sun ain't going down There's a reason that it's hotter It don't matter who's to blame You should be ashamed of this world You should be ashamed You should be ashamed Of this world You gathered up the nickels And you put 'em in your pouch You kept the motor running while you dozed off on the couch The world owes you nothing And it's nothing that you'll get And from nothing, double nothing Double crossing every bet I've been running all the numbers And there's nowhere left to go This world is a landmine Step lightly through the cold Now we're going out in style With a righteous stainless smile And the dogs continue barking as we stroll another mile You should be ashamed of this world You should be ashamed You should be ashamed Of this world

Ever since you left me, I’ve been down on one knee I would have gone down lower but the begging set me free The begging made me weaker And the kneeling made me pray The praying made me hopeful But the hoping made me beg I’m getting ready for the feast/ Ready for the feast I’m already on my knees and I’m in the thick of it I’m a creature of your habits / I come crawling when you call I never change the pictures / I am loyal to a fault I am loyal like a baby / Loyal like a tree Loyal like the desert / I am loyal like the sea I am loyal like the phonebook / Loyal to my name Loyal to the bottle/ I am loyal to my shame I’m the last one in the sinking ship / The last one in the room Or in the phone booth waiting for the call The call that never tells me / I’ll never get the call The call that says I’m loyal to a fault Some paths just lead me backwards Just like some change can bring the wind But all that wind just made me feel Like I was running like the wind All this running gets me nowhere / But nowhere ain’t that far But running gets there faster than the slowest falling star And all this pain helps me remember That all this pain should bring me strength But strength is overrated and pain ain’t no great shake

The tale is told / A dead man lingered Haunted by a joyful gift Until his love shall die and join him He clings to jubilation’s grip I saw her face across the meadow A story told in lover’s lips The arrow hit below the shoulder Pierced by jubilation’s grip Just before I reached the clearing Punctured by a venom tip A snake’s revenge can last a lifetime Stung by jubilation’s grip Morning starts with heavy patterns Then lightning strikes above the wrist After midnight cooling embers Glow like jubilation’s grip Finger tips are green with envy Nail biters cracking whips This moment might just last forever Tight as jubilation’s grip Try to find a single witness Who turns away and can’t resist The warm embrace of glowing embers Hot as jubilation’s grip *** I felt the joy slip from my fingers And wings alone won’t save this trip Life alone will cling to living Sweet as jubilation’s grip A sailor’s time is drawn and quartered From wave to wave on battered ship The storm will hit when most it matters Sunk by jubilation’s grip Clap your hands to snap the pressure Sink it like a cargo ship One by one the stars are falling Bright as jubilation’s grip I taste the rain and drink the summer With each regret a moment slips Haunted by the speed of light That reaches jubilation’s grip Every man and every woman Humbled by a fatal slip Reaching out for steady footing Saved by jubilation’s grip I raise a glass to every glass After prayers, the wine is sipped Harvesting the river water That flows like jubilation’s grip I close my eyes and reach for silence And dream the dream the dust cloud drifts Slowly floating to your arms Sleep is jubilation’s grip Sleep is jubilation’s gift Sleep is jubilation’s grip

Opus Bonus 01:15

about

As you should expect, Al Rose's 7th album has a lot of the unexpected. Musically, this contains both some of the hardest rocking Al’s done in years- and also some of the most exquisitely-arranged pieces too. Amongst those adding to the whirlwind of creativity from The Transcendos are singer Sue Demel (Sons Of The Never Wrong), violinist Zach Brock (who also wrote the string arrangements), cellist Nicholas Photinos (eighth blackbird), and trombonist Jeb Bishop.

“An album that cannot be called ordinary. Lyrics of a rare high standard. It’s difficult to define or pigeon-hole Rose’s music: blues, folk, rock, and jazz are all there in his songs- just not immediately recognizable which is which, and that’s part of the attraction. Add the profound lyrics and very special arrangements, Spin Spin Dizzy does not reveal all its secrets on the first listen."
— Keys And Chords, Belgium

“The songwriter from Chicago navigates between blues, jazz, and country without denying the rock. Is that a sitar and spoons combo? A horn section with banjo? There’s more to discover past a first listening, especially when you delve into the lyrics. A musical bouquet!"
— Written In Music, Belgium

“Al Rose, who is always impressive, brings his intelligent, funny, and sharp songs with the beautiful arrangements he consistently creates."
— Moors Magazine, Holland
